One Day in Marina Bay: An Easy Walking Itinerary

A morning-to-night walking plan for Marina Bay that links the main sights in order and keeps you indoors in the hottest hours.

By EatStays Editorial · Updated · 4 min read

One day in Marina Bay is enough to see the main sights on foot, as long as you plan around the heat. Walk the waterfront in the morning and go indoors in the middle of the day. Save the gardens and the light shows for the evening.

This plan starts near Raffles Place and ends in front of Marina Bay Sands. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water and bring a small umbrella for sun or rain. Opening hours and ticket prices change, so check them before you go.

One day in Marina Bay at a glance

  1. Morning: kaya toast for breakfast, then the Merlion and the waterfront.
  2. Late morning: Esplanade and the Helix Bridge.
  3. Midday: lunch and indoor time at Marina Bay Sands.
  4. Afternoon: the cool domes at Gardens by the Bay.
  5. Evening: hawker dinner, the Supertrees and two free light shows.

The MRT gets you here easily. Our guide on how to get to Marina Bay lists the right station for each stop. For more ideas, see our list of things to do in Marina Bay or browse all our Marina Bay guides.

Morning: kaya toast and the Merlion

Start with breakfast at Ya Kun Kaya Toast (Far East Square). Order kaya toast, which is crisp toast with butter and a sweet coconut and egg jam. Add soft-boiled eggs and a cup of kopi, the local coffee. New to it? Our guide What Is Kaya Toast? explains the dish.

Then walk to Merlion Park, about 15 minutes away through Raffles Place. The morning light is soft and the crowds are smaller. Photograph the Merlion with Marina Bay Sands behind it. Then look back at the Fullerton Hotel Singapore, a grand heritage building near the mouth of the river.

Late morning: Esplanade and the Helix Bridge

Cross the Jubilee Bridge from Merlion Park to Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. Its spiky domes are a favourite photo stop. Pop inside to cool down, or go up to the roof terrace for a free view of the bay.

Continue along the water to the Helix Bridge, a footbridge that twists like a strand of DNA. It leads you across to the Marina Bay Sands side. This stretch has little shade, so try to finish it before the midday heat.

Midday: indoor time at Marina Bay Sands

Spend the hottest hours indoors. The ArtScience Museum has changing exhibitions on art, science and technology. Its white, lotus-shaped building sits right on the water.

For lunch, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands has plenty of choice. Ippudo (Marina Bay Sands) serves Japanese ramen if you want a sit-down bowl. The mall is air-conditioned, so it is a good place to rest before the afternoon.

Afternoon: the cool domes at Gardens by the Bay

Follow the signs from Marina Bay Sands to the footbridge into Gardens by the Bay. Go first to the two glass domes, which are cool inside. The Cloud Forest has a tall indoor waterfall and a misty mountain of plants. The Flower Dome holds flowers and trees from cooler, drier parts of the world.

When the day cools a little, walk through the free outdoor gardens to the Supertree Grove. You can pay for the OCBC Skyway, a walkway high up between the Supertrees. With energy to spare, walk on to Marina Barrage for sunset on its grassy roof.

Evening: dinner and free light shows

Have dinner at Satay by the Bay, a food centre inside the gardens. Try satay, grilled meat skewers with peanut sauce, along with other hawker dishes. If hawker food is new to you, read our hawker centre etiquette tips first.

After dark, return to the Supertree Grove for Garden Rhapsody, a free light and music show. Then walk back to the waterfront in front of Marina Bay Sands for Spectra, a free light and water show. Each show runs more than once a night, so you can usually see both. Our guide to free light shows in Singapore explains where to stand.

To end the night, see the city lights from the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark Observation Deck. Or cross the Helix Bridge for a late snack at Makansutra Gluttons Bay.

FAQs about one day in Marina Bay

Is one day enough for Marina Bay?

Yes. One full day covers the main sights at an easy pace. Plan extra time if you also want to visit the nearby museums.

Can I see Marina Bay on foot?

Yes. The waterfront promenade and footbridges link most of the sights. Distances are short, but the heat makes them feel longer, so take breaks.

What order should I see Marina Bay in?

Start at the Merlion in the morning and reach Marina Bay Sands by midday. Spend the afternoon at Gardens by the Bay and finish with the light shows.

What should I wear for a day in Marina Bay?

Wear light clothes, comfortable shoes and a hat. Bring a thin layer too, because the domes and malls can feel cold.
