Singapore's waterfront arts centre, known for its spiky domes and its many free performances by the bay.
Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is Singapore's main centre for the performing arts. It sits on the waterfront by Marina Bay, near the mouth of the Singapore River. It opened in 2002 and was built for music, dance, theatre and more.
You do not need a show ticket to enjoy it. The building is free to enter, and there are many free performances. This guide covers what to see, how to get there and tips for your visit.
The Esplanade is a large arts centre with a concert hall, a theatre and several smaller spaces. Local and international artists perform here through the year.
The two domes are the most famous part of the building. They are covered in spiky, triangular sunshades. Many people say the domes look like durians, the spiky fruit popular across South-East Asia.
The programme covers many art forms and cultures. Yearly festivals celebrate Chinese, Malay and Indian arts, among others. This makes the Esplanade a good place to see the mix of cultures in Singapore.
There is plenty to do even if you do not book a show. Spend some time exploring inside and outside the building.

The nearest MRT station is Esplanade, on the Circle Line. An underground walkway links the area to City Hall MRT station, on the North–South Line and the East–West Line.
You can also walk here along the waterfront. From Merlion Park, cross the Jubilee Bridge to reach the Esplanade. It is also a pleasant walk from the Padang and the civic district.
For more help, see our guide on how to use the MRT in Singapore.
Many free performances take place in the evenings and at weekends. Show times change, so check the official website for opening hours, tickets and the free show schedule. You can find the programme on the Esplanade website.
For ticketed shows, book ahead, as popular events can sell out. Arrive early to find your seat and enjoy the waterfront first.
Early evening is a good time to visit. You can watch the sunset over the bay, catch a free show and then see the city lights. The building is air-conditioned, so it is also a good choice on a hot or rainy day.
The Esplanade is close to many museums and sights. Visit National Gallery Singapore or the Asian Civilisations Museum by the river. Take a Singapore River Cruise to see the city from the water. For green space, walk up to Fort Canning Park.
For a special meal, Odette and National Kitchen by Violet Oon are both at National Gallery Singapore. JAAN by Kirk Westaway is high up in Swissôtel The Stamford. Browse more restaurants in City Hall and Clarke Quay.
To stay nearby, look at Swissôtel The Stamford, The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore or other hotels in City Hall and Clarke Quay. You will find more ideas in Culture & Heritage and Free Things To Do.
