Singapore's oldest Catholic church, a calm national monument in the City Hall area with free entry and classical design.
The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Singapore. It opened in 1847 and stands on Queen Street, near Bras Basah Road, in the City Hall area.
It is still a working church and the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore. Visitors of all faiths may look around, and entry is free.
This is one of the oldest buildings in central Singapore. Its white walls, tall columns and slim spire stand out against the modern city around it. The church was made a national monument in 1973.
The building is shaped like a cross when seen from above. Its classical design is calm and balanced, with columns, arched windows and neat, simple lines.
A long restoration in the 2010s repaired the structure and refreshed the interior. Today the cathedral feels bright and well cared for, while keeping its old character.
For many visitors, the best part is the quiet. A few minutes inside give you a break from the heat and traffic of the city centre.
Take your time and walk slowly. There is no set route, but these are the main things to notice.

If you want to take photos, do so quietly and only when no service is taking place. Follow any signs or requests from church staff.
If you are Catholic or simply curious, you are welcome to join a Mass. Sit towards the back if you are unsure of the order of the service. If you are not Catholic, stay in your seat during Communion.
The cathedral is easy to reach on foot from much of the Civic District. Bras Basah MRT station on the Circle Line is the closest, just a few minutes away. City Hall MRT station is also within walking distance.
If you are new to the trains, read our guide on how to use the MRT in Singapore. Many city buses also stop along Bras Basah Road and Victoria Street.
The cathedral sits right across Victoria Street from CHIJMES, so it is simple to combine the two. The National Museum of Singapore is also a short walk away.
The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd is a place of prayer first, so a little care goes a long way.
You can find the latest details on the official cathedral website. For more on local customs, see our page on etiquette and local laws.
The cathedral is in the heart of the city's culture and heritage district. Within a short walk you will find St Andrew's Cathedral, the Armenian Church and green Fort Canning Park. Together they make an easy half-day heritage walk.

Yes, entry is free. It is an active church, so please visit quietly and respect anyone who is praying.
Wear modest clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. Light, loose clothing works well in the heat.
Yes, visitors are welcome at Mass. Check the official website for the current Mass schedule.
Most people spend 30 minutes to an hour. Allow more time if you plan to visit CHIJMES or the nearby museums too.
