CHIJMES

A restored former convent with a Gothic-style chapel and quiet courtyards, now home to restaurants, bars and event spaces.

About CHIJMES

CHIJMES (pronounced chimes) is a group of restored convent buildings in the Civic District of Singapore. Its white walls, old chapel and green lawns make it a calm place in the middle of the city. Today it holds restaurants, bars and event spaces. It is free to walk around the grounds.

This guide explains its history, what to see and how to visit with respect.

What is CHIJMES and why visit

The name comes from the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus, or CHIJ. Catholic sisters ran a convent and girls' school on this site for well over a century. The school moved to a new home in the 1980s. The buildings were then restored and opened to the public as CHIJMES.

The chapel and Caldwell House are now national monuments. People visit for the architecture, the quiet courtyards and the many places to eat. It is also a popular spot for photos and weddings. In the evening, its restaurants and bars make it a calm choice on our Nightlife list.

What to see at CHIJMES

  • CHIJMES Hall: The former chapel has Gothic-style arches, stained glass windows and fine plaster work. It is now used for weddings, concerts and events.
  • Caldwell House: One of the oldest buildings on the site, dating from the 1840s.
  • Courtyards and lawns: The grassy courtyard is framed by covered walkways and arches. It is a good spot for a short rest.
  • Gate of Hope: A small gate on Victoria Street where, in the past, babies were left in the care of the sisters.
  • Evening lights: After dark, the buildings are softly lit and the courtyards feel calm and cool.

Visiting CHIJMES respectfully

CHIJMES Hall is no longer a working church, but it was once a chapel. Many visitors still see it as a special place. Please keep your voice down inside and follow any signs or staff instructions. Do not walk into weddings or private events.

Dress is relaxed in the outdoor areas. If you go inside the hall, modest clothes are a good choice. Ask before taking photos of people at weddings or events.
