Singapore Areas With Covered Walkways to the MRT

Where to stay so that underground links and sheltered paths take you from your hotel to the MRT without facing rain or midday sun.

By EatStays Editorial · Updated · 4 min read

The Singapore areas with covered walkways and underground links that work best for visitors are Marina Bay, City Hall, Raffles Place, Orchard and Bugis. In these areas, some hotels connect to a mall that leads straight into an MRT station. You can start your day without stepping into the rain or the midday sun.

This guide shows where those links are and which hotels sit on them. Housing towns outside the centre have covered paths too, which we explain near the end. For more neighbourhood guides, see Where to Stay by Area.

Why covered walkways matter in Singapore

Singapore is hot and humid all year. Heavy showers can start with little warning, often in the afternoon. A ten-minute walk to the station can leave you soaked or sticky before you reach your first sight.

A hotel with an indoor or covered route to the MRT solves this. It also helps if you travel with young children, a pram, a wheelchair or heavy bags. For more ways to judge a location, see How to Choose a Hotel Area in Singapore.

Marina Bay

From Bayfront station, on the Circle and Downtown lines, an underground passage leads into The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. The mall connects indoors to the Marina Bay Sands hotel, so guests can reach the trains without going outside.

Across the bay, Pan Pacific Singapore, Mandarin Oriental Singapore and PARKROYAL Collection Marina Bay are linked to the Marina Square mall. From there, sheltered and underground routes lead towards Suntec City and the Esplanade area. See more in Hotels in Marina Bay & CBD and How to Get to Marina Bay by MRT, Bus and Taxi.

City Hall and Raffles Place

City Hall

City Hall station, on the North-South and East-West lines, sits below the Raffles City shopping centre. Swissôtel The Stamford is part of the same complex, so the trains are only a lift ride away. From the station, CityLink Mall runs underground towards the Esplanade, with links on to Marina Square and Suntec City.

Raffles Place

Raffles Place station, also on the North-South and East-West lines, has underground links to nearby office towers. Marina Bay Link Mall continues from the station to Marina Bay Financial Centre and Downtown station. This area suits business travellers who want to move between meetings under cover.

Orchard Road

Orchard station, on the North-South and Thomson-East Coast lines, opens straight into ION Orchard. Underground passages lead on to nearby malls such as Wisma Atria and Ngee Ann City. Along the street, wide pavements, trees and mall canopies give shade for much of the way.

For hotels, Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel stands by Orchard station, at the corner of Orchard Road and Scotts Road. Hotel Jen Orchardgateway sits above a mall that is linked to Somerset station. Browse Hotels in Orchard & River Valley, or read Marina Bay vs Orchard: Where Should You Stay?

Bugis

Bugis station, on the East-West and Downtown lines, connects underground to Bugis Junction. This mall was built around old shophouse streets covered by a glass roof, so you can stroll between shops and stay dry. InterContinental Singapore is part of the Bugis Junction complex.

Bugis Street, a covered street market, is just across Victoria Street. More options are in Hotels in Bugis & Kampong Glam.

Covered linkways in housing towns

Outside the centre, many housing estates have covered linkways from the blocks to the nearest MRT station and bus stops. If you stay in one of these towns, you can often walk to the train under a roof. Read Staying in the Singapore Heartlands: What to Expect to learn more.

  • Look at the hotel's own directions page for words like "direct access" or "linked to".
  • Use a map app's walking route and switch to satellite view to spot roofs.
  • Check which station exit is closest, as big stations have many exits.
  • Read guest reviews that mention rain or the walk to the MRT.

FAQs about Singapore areas with covered walkways

Which hotels connect directly to an MRT station?

Hotels attached to station malls are the best bet, such as Marina Bay Sands, Swissôtel The Stamford and InterContinental Singapore. Always check the hotel's directions before you book.

Is Orchard Road fully covered?

No. Much of it is shaded by trees and canopies, and the malls near the stations are linked underground. Some stretches are still open to the rain.

Are the underground links step-free?

MRT stations have lifts, and most malls do too. Not every passage is step-free, so check the route if you use a wheelchair or pram.

Do covered walkways help at the airport?

Yes. Jewel Changi Airport links indoors to the terminals, and the airport MRT station sits between Terminals 2 and 3, reached without going outside.
