A large covered street market near Bugis MRT, with stalls selling clothes, souvenirs, accessories and snacks.
Bugis Street is a large covered street market in the heart of Singapore. Rows of small stalls sell clothes, bags, souvenirs, phone accessories, beauty products and snacks. It is free to walk in, and many items are good value. Lots of visitors come here to pick up gifts before they fly home.
This guide covers what to buy, how to get there and what to see nearby.
Bugis Street is one of the best-known places in Singapore for budget shopping. The market is a maze of narrow lanes, with stalls set close together. It feels very different from the large, quiet malls elsewhere in the city.
The area takes its name from the Bugis people, seafaring traders from Sulawesi in what is now Indonesia. Today Bugis is a busy shopping and dining district. It sits close to Kampong Glam and the Civic District, so it is easy to fit into a day of sightseeing.

Prices are often fixed, but some stalls may give a small discount if you buy several items. Ask politely. Our guides to souvenirs and gifts and markets and bazaars have more ideas.
Bugis MRT station is a short walk away. It is on the East West Line and the Downtown Line. Follow the signs to Bugis Street when you leave the station. If you need help with the trains, read how to use the MRT in Singapore.
The market is also an easy walk from Kampong Glam and from the museums of the Civic District.

Bugis is close to Kampong Glam and Haji Lane, with colourful shophouses and small shops. The Sultan Mosque is also nearby. It is a working mosque, so dress modestly, cover your arms and legs, and follow the visitor rules. Avoid visiting during prayer times.
On nearby Waterloo Street, the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple is a busy Buddhist temple. Please be quiet and respectful if you look inside.
For a meal, try Wah Lok Cantonese for dim sum or Tiffin Room for North Indian food. Browse more restaurants in Bugis and Kampong Glam, or read our Kampong Glam and Bugis guide.
