Where to Stay by Area

Best Area for First-Time Visitors to Singapore

City Hall, Marina Bay, Chinatown and Bugis compared as bases for a first trip, judged on sights, MRT lines, food and ease of getting around.

By EatStays Editorial · Updated · 4 min read

The best area for first-time visitors to Singapore is the city centre around the Singapore River, especially City Hall and Clarke Quay. From there, museums, Marina Bay and Chinatown are a short walk or a few MRT stops away. As places to stay, Marina Bay, Chinatown and Bugis are strong choices too.

All four areas sit on more than one MRT line and have plenty of food nearby. Below, we explain how each area scores, so you can match it to your trip. For more neighbourhood guides, see Where to Stay by Area.

How we judged each area

A first trip is usually short and busy. So we looked at four things that save time every day:

  • Sightseeing reach: how many main sights you can walk to.
  • MRT lines: how many lines stop nearby, so you change trains less.
  • Food nearby: a hawker centre or food court within walking distance.
  • Finding your way: clear landmarks, simple streets and good signs.

Our wider guide, Where to Stay in Singapore: Best Areas Compared, covers more neighbourhoods. Here we focus on the strongest bases for a first visit.

City Hall and Clarke Quay: the best area for first-time visitors

This is the most central base in the city. The National Museum of Singapore, National Gallery Singapore and Fort Canning Park are all close by. You can walk along the river to Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and the Merlion.

Transport is just as good. City Hall station is an interchange for the North-South and East-West lines. Clarke Quay station is on the North East Line, and Fort Canning station is on the Downtown Line.

Hotels range from heritage buildings to tall towers. Swissôtel The Stamford is part of the Raffles City complex above City Hall station. Hotel Fort Canning is a boutique stay in Fort Canning Park. Browse more in Hotels in City Hall & Clarke Quay.

Marina Bay: the skyline on your doorstep

Stay here if you want the city views right outside. Gardens by the Bay, the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark and the free evening light show are all close.

Bayfront station serves the Circle and Downtown lines, and Raffles Place links the North-South and East-West lines. For a quick, cheap meal, Lau Pa Sat has many hawker stalls under one roof. Room rates here are often higher than in other central areas. See Hotels in Marina Bay & CBD, or read Marina Bay vs Orchard: Where Should You Stay?

Chinatown: food first, good value

Chinatown suits travellers who plan their days around food. Chinatown Complex Food Centre is a large hawker centre with many stalls. Maxwell Food Centre is a short walk away.

Temples such as the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Sri Mariamman Temple are only a few streets apart. Dress modestly and follow the rules posted at each one.

Chinatown station is on the North East and Downtown lines. The Downtown Line runs to Bayfront for Marina Bay. The North East Line runs to HarbourFront for Sentosa. Boutique hotels such as Hotel 1929 are common in the area. Torn between two heritage districts? Read Chinatown or Little India: Which Area to Stay In?

Bugis and Kampong Glam: central and good value

Bugis sits between City Hall and Little India. Bugis station is on the East-West and Downtown lines, and City Hall is one stop away.

The streets of Kampong Glam and Haji Lane are close, with the Sultan Mosque at their heart. Cover your arms and legs if you go inside the mosque. For cheap meals, Albert Centre Market & Food Centre is nearby. Room rates are often lower than on Marina Bay. See options such as Village Hotel Bugis in Hotels in Bugis & Kampong Glam.

Quick picks by type of trip

  • Mostly sightseeing: City Hall or Clarke Quay.
  • Views and a special stay: Marina Bay.
  • Food on a budget: Chinatown or Bugis.
  • Shopping: Orchard Road, though fewer main sights are within walking distance.
  • Beaches and theme parks: Sentosa, but trips into the city take longer.

FAQs about the best area for first-time visitors

Is Marina Bay or Chinatown better for a first visit?

Marina Bay is better for views and a special stay. Chinatown is better for food and lower room rates. Both are on the Downtown Line, so moving between them is quick.

Do I need to stay near an MRT station?

It helps a lot. Trains are frequent, air-conditioned and good value. A short walk to the station saves time and keeps you out of the heat. Our guide to using the MRT explains fares and cards.

Is Sentosa a good base for a first trip?

Sentosa suits beach and theme park holidays. For a first trip with lots of city sightseeing, a central area is easier. You can still visit Sentosa as a day trip from HarbourFront.

Is Little India a good area for first-time visitors?

Yes, if you enjoy busy streets and Indian food. It is on the North East and Downtown lines, and rooms are often cheaper. It is a little further from Marina Bay than Chinatown.
