National Museum of Singapore

Singapore's oldest museum, in a domed historic building on Stamford Road, telling the story of the island and its people.

About National Museum of Singapore

The National Museum of Singapore is the oldest museum in the country. Its story goes back to 1849, and it is now a key place to learn about the history and culture of Singapore. The museum sits in a grand white building with a dome on Stamford Road, beside Fort Canning Park.

It is a great first stop if you want to understand how Singapore became the city it is today.

What is the National Museum of Singapore?

The museum began as part of a library and museum in the 1800s. Its main building, with its dome and columns, opened in the 1880s. Over time, its focus moved to the history and people of Singapore. Today the building is a national monument.

Inside, old and new parts sit side by side. A modern glass wing and rotunda connect to the historic building. Exhibits use objects, photos, film and sound to tell stories from early times to the present day.
