Marina Barrage
A free dam with a large grassy roof, wide city views and plenty of open space for picnics and kite flying.
About Marina Barrage
Marina Barrage is a dam across the mouth of Marina Bay, where the bay meets the sea. It opened in 2008. Its large grassy roof is free to visit and gives wide views of the city skyline.
It is a relaxed place for a picnic, a sunset walk or flying a kite. This guide explains what to see, how to get there and when to go.
What is Marina Barrage?
The barrage is a dam built across the Marina Channel. It closes off the bay from the sea and turns it into a freshwater reservoir in the middle of the city.
The dam has three main jobs. It stores fresh water for Singapore. It helps protect low-lying parts of the city from floods. It also keeps the water level in the bay steady, which suits boating and other water sports.
PUB, Singapore's national water agency, looks after the barrage. You can read more about it on the official Marina Barrage website.
What to see and do at Marina Barrage
Most people come for the open space and the views. It feels calm compared with the busy waterfront around Marina Bay.

- The green roof: a wide lawn on top of the building, open to the public.
- Kite flying: the roof is often breezy, and you will see families flying kites.
- Picnics: bring a mat and some snacks and relax on the grass.
- City views: look across the water to the city skyline and the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark.
- The sea: on the other side, you can see ships waiting in the Singapore Strait.
- The dam gates: see the row of large steel gates that hold back the sea.

There is little shade on the roof. Avoid the middle of the day if you can, and check the weather before you go. Our page on weather and the best time to visit has more on the climate.
