Changi transit hotels: airside or landside?

This Changi transit hotel guide starts with one question: will you pass through immigration? Changi Airport has two kinds of places to sleep. Airside transit hotels sit in the transit area, beyond passport control. Landside hotels sit outside it, so you must enter Singapore first. Your answer decides which one you can use.

Airside suits a long connection when you do not want to enter the country. Landside suits a late arrival, an early departure or a short stopover in the city.

Staying airside in the transit area

An airside transit hotel lets you rest between flights without clearing immigration. That can matter if your passport needs a visa for Singapore. It also saves time, as you stay close to your departure gate.

Rooms are usually simple and compact. Many transit hotels sell stays in blocks of a few hours, not just whole nights. Rooms can sell out at busy times, so book ahead if you can.

Points to check before you book

  • Your terminal. Transit hotels are not in every terminal. The Skytrain links Terminals 1, 2 and 3, so a short transfer is often possible.
  • Your bags. If your bags are checked through to your final stop, you only need hand luggage. Pack a change of clothes and any medicine in your cabin bag.
  • Separate tickets. On separate bookings, you may need to collect your bags and check in again. That means clearing immigration, so plan for a landside hotel instead.
  • A shorter break. If you only need a shower and a quiet seat, pay-per-use lounges in the transit area are another option.

Landside hotels at the terminals and Jewel

Landside hotels suit travellers who are entering Singapore, even for one night. You clear immigration, collect your bags and then check in.

Crowne Plaza Changi Airport is a 4-star hotel linked to Terminal 3. It suits travellers who want a full hotel within walking distance of check-in. Jewel Changi Airport YOTELAIR is inside Jewel, the mall and garden complex linked to the terminals. Its compact rooms suit a short rest before or after a flight.

A night here also gives you time to explore Jewel Changi Airport. It has shops, places to eat, garden walks and a huge indoor waterfall called the Rain Vortex. Jewel is free to enter, though some attractions inside charge a fee.

Hotels a short ride away in Changi Village

Village Hotel Changi and Changi Cove are in Changi Village, on the north-east coast. Village Hotel Changi is a 4-star hotel, while Changi Cove is a smaller boutique stay. Neither is within walking distance of the terminals. Take a taxi or a ride-hailing car, and allow extra time before an early flight.

The area rewards a stopover of a day or more. Changi Beach Park is good for an evening walk by the sea. Bumboats, which are small motor boats, cross from Changi Point to Pulau Ubin, a quiet island with cycling trails. See all Hotels in Changi & Airport for more choices.

How to choose the right airport stay

  • A long connection with no entry: an airside transit hotel, booked for the hours you need.
  • A late arrival or a dawn flight: a hotel linked to the terminals, so you can walk to check-in.
  • A night or two to explore: Changi Village puts beaches and island trips close by.
  • A longer trip: the airport is far from most sights. After a night, move to a central area. Where to Stay in Singapore: Best Areas Compared can help you choose.

Getting into the city

Changi Airport MRT station sits under Terminals 2 and 3. The MRT is Singapore's metro. Most trips to the centre need a change at Tanah Merah. It is the cheapest option, but slower with big bags. Read How to Use the MRT in Singapore: A Tourist Guide before you travel. Taxis wait at every terminal, and ride-hailing apps work across the island.

Before you leave the airport

Check the entry rules for your passport on the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority website. Travellers who clear immigration must also submit the SG Arrival Card online before they land. If you shop before flying home, read GST Refund at Changi Airport: Step-by-Step Guide.

FAQs about Changi transit hotels

Can I stay at Changi Airport without entering Singapore?

Yes, at an airside transit hotel in the transit area. You stay beyond immigration, so you do not enter the country. Landside hotels, such as those at Jewel and Terminal 3, need you to clear immigration first.

Can I book a transit hotel room for a few hours?

Many airside transit hotels sell stays in blocks of a few hours. Check the options in your terminal and book ahead at busy times.

Is Jewel Changi Airport airside or landside?

Jewel is landside. You must clear immigration to reach it, so check the entry rules for your passport first.

Is it worth leaving the airport on a long layover?

If you have several hours and can enter Singapore, yes. The city centre is often 20 to 30 minutes away by taxi. Allow plenty of time to get back for your flight. Singapore Layover Itinerary: 8 Hours in the City suggests a simple route.
