What to look for in a Singapore luxury hotel

Luxury hotel reviews in Singapore often praise the same things: big pools, smooth service and polished rooms. Yet the city's five-star hotels differ a lot. Some are colonial landmarks. Others are glass towers above Marina Bay or resorts on Sentosa island. The right choice depends on what you want from your stay.

This guide explains how to read reviews, which areas suit which travellers and how to pay less. For a full list of top-end stays, see 5-Star Luxury.

Reading luxury hotel reviews: what really matters

Star ratings and photos only tell part of the story. When you read guest reviews, look for comments on these points.

  • Views. Ask which way the room faces. A bay-view or city-view room can cost much more than a standard one. Make sure the view in the photos matches the room you book.
  • Service. Look for comments on check-in, help with luggage and how staff handle problems. These details separate a good stay from a great one.
  • Location. Note the walk to the nearest MRT station, Singapore's metro. A short, sheltered walk matters in the heat and the rain.
  • Pool and spa. Pools range from small rooftop dips to large garden pools. Recent reviews often mention closures for repairs.
  • Recent dates. Rooms and service change over time. Give more weight to reviews from the last few months.

Five-star hotels by area

Marina Bay: views and big landmarks

Marina Bay Sands is known for its rooftop infinity pool, which is open only to hotel guests. The Fullerton Bay Hotel sits right on the water. Mandarin Oriental Singapore is a short walk from the bay. Stay here for skyline views and easy walks to Gardens by the Bay.

Heritage hotels: history and character

Raffles Hotel Singapore is a colonial-era hotel on Beach Road and a national monument. The Fullerton Hotel Singapore fills the grand former General Post Office building by the Singapore River. Both suit travellers who enjoy old buildings and a sense of the past.

Orchard and Tanglin: shopping and green streets

Four Seasons Hotel Singapore and Shangri-La Singapore are in the greener, calmer area near the western end of Orchard Road. They suit shoppers and travellers who like quiet streets. Marina Bay vs Orchard: Where Should You Stay? compares the two areas.

Sentosa: a resort break

Capella Singapore mixes restored colonial buildings with tropical grounds on Sentosa island. It suits couples and anyone who wants a slower pace. Remember that the island is a taxi or monorail ride from most city sights.

When is a luxury hotel worth the price?

A five-star room can cost several times more than a good 4-star room. It tends to be worth it in these cases.

  • You are marking a special occasion, such as a honeymoon or a big birthday.
  • You will spend real time at the hotel, using the pool, spa or club lounge.
  • The location saves you time, with the sights you plan to see a short walk away.
  • The rate includes extras you would pay for anyway, such as breakfast for two.

If you will be out from morning to night, a central 4-star hotel may serve you just as well. See 4-Star Hotels for options.

How to pay less for a five-star stay

  • Be flexible with dates. Rates rise during big events such as the Singapore Grand Prix and busy holiday periods.
  • Compare room types. An entry-level room at a top hotel can cost less than a suite somewhere else.
  • Check what "++" means. A price marked "++" does not yet include service charge and GST, Singapore's goods and services tax.
  • Weigh up packages. Breakfast, late check-out or club access can add real value.
  • Know the rough costs. Many five-star rooms start from around S$400 a night, and suites cost far more. Prices change with dates and demand, so check the latest prices.
