Nightclubs in Singapore: what to expect
Nightclubs in Singapore range from big dance clubs with international DJs to small bars with a resident DJ. Live music is just as easy to find, from jazz bars to cover bands by the river. Most of the action happens on Friday and Saturday nights, and it starts late. Many people have dinner and a drink first, then reach the club well after dark. The legal drinking age is 18, and some clubs set a higher limit.
Where to go out
Clarke Quay and the river
Clarke Quay is the best-known nightlife area. Its old riverside warehouses now hold clubs, bars and live music venues. Many bars here have bands or DJs at weekends. See Clarke Quay & Robertson Quay for more on the area.
Marina Bay
Marina Bay has hotel bars and sky-high lounges with skyline views. Ce La Vi, at the top of Marina Bay Sands, pairs modern Asian food with drinks and a big view. Dress codes here tend to be stricter, so dress up a little.
Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar
Small bars in old shophouses often bring in DJs later in the evening. A shophouse is a narrow terrace building with a shop below and rooms above. These bars suit people who want music without a huge dance floor.
Sentosa
Beach clubs on the island have a relaxed feel that runs from the afternoon into the evening. Try Tanjong Beach Club or Coastes, which both serve Western food. Plan your ride back to the city before you go.
Live music, jazz and free concerts
You do not need a club to hear good music. Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay often holds free performances by the waterfront. Jazz bars and hotel lounges often have live sets in the evening. CHIJMES, a former convent near City Hall, has bars around its courtyards, and some host live bands. Its old chapel is used for weddings and events, so please treat it with respect.
Big international concerts usually take place at large venues such as the National Stadium. Check the Events Calendar for big shows during your trip.
Entry fees, dress codes and ID
- Cover charge. Big clubs often charge entry, especially later at night and at weekends. It may include a drink. Expect roughly S$20 to S$40, but prices change, so check before you go.
- Tables. Groups can book a table, usually with a minimum spend on drinks.
- Dress code. Smart casual is the norm. Many clubs turn away shorts, vests and flip-flops. Rooftop Bar Dress Code in Singapore: What to Wear has advice that works for clubs too.
- Photo ID. Bring your passport or another official photo ID. A photo of it on your phone may not be accepted.
- Age limits. The legal drinking age is 18, but some clubs only let in older guests on certain nights.
Staying safe and getting home
- Drink responsibly. Pace yourself, drink water and never leave your drink alone.
- Know the law. Singapore has very strict drug laws, with severe penalties. Drinking in public places is not allowed late at night. Read Etiquette & Local Laws before you go out.
- Plan your ride. The MRT does not run all night. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are easy to find, but fares rise late at night. See Getting Around.
- Eat before bed. Supper, a late-night meal, is a local habit. See the Late-Night Food topic.
