Singapore Zoo

A large wildlife park in Mandai with open, natural-looking enclosures, orangutans and areas for young children.

About Singapore Zoo

Singapore Zoo is a large wildlife park in Mandai, in the north of Singapore. It opened in 1973 and is known for its open, natural-looking enclosures. Many animals live behind moats, streams or glass rather than cages.

This guide explains what to see, how to get there, how to cope with the heat and what else to do nearby.

Why visit Singapore Zoo?

The zoo sits beside Upper Seletar Reservoir, surrounded by forest. Shady paths lead through areas based on different parts of the world. You can see animals from many continents in a single visit.

Singapore Zoo is part of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve. Night Safari, River Wonders and Bird Paradise are all close by. This makes Mandai a good choice for a full day with children or animal lovers.

What to see and do at the zoo

Use the park map or the official Singapore Zoo website to plan your route. The zoo is large, so focus on the areas that interest you most.

  • Orangutans: the zoo has long been known for its orangutans, which you can watch climbing high in the trees.
  • Fragile Forest: a walk-through area where smaller animals and butterflies move around you.
  • Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia: an area with a large troop of baboons.
  • Elephants, rhinos and giraffes: some of the biggest animals in the park.
  • KidzWorld: an area for younger children with farm animals and water play.

The zoo also runs animal presentations and feeding sessions during the day. Times change, so check the official website or the information at the entrance. Never feed the animals yourself. Only take part in feeding sessions run by staff.

Walk slowly and give each area a few minutes. Many animals rest in the shade, and they are easy to miss at first glance.

How to get to Singapore Zoo

There is no MRT station at the zoo. A common route is to take the train to Khatib MRT station on the North-South Line. From there, a shuttle bus runs to the Mandai parks. Check the official website for the current shuttle service.

Public buses also stop at the Mandai parks, and a journey planner app will show the best route from your hotel. A taxi or ride-hailing car is the simplest choice for families. If you are new to the trains, read our guide on how to use the MRT in Singapore.

Tips for visiting Singapore Zoo

Singapore is hot and humid all year, so plan around the heat. Arrive early, when it is cooler and many animals are more active. Rest in the shade during the hottest part of the day.

  • Wear light clothes, a hat and comfortable walking shoes.
  • Bring a refillable water bottle and drink often.
  • Pack a light rain jacket or umbrella for sudden showers.
  • Use the zoo map to plan a loop and save walking time.
  • Check the official website for opening hours and tickets.

Most main paths are paved and suit prams and wheelchairs. Check the official website for accessibility details before you go. For more weather advice, see our guide to the weather and best time to visit Singapore.

Food and things to do nearby

There are cafés and food outlets inside the zoo and around the Mandai entrance area. You can stop for a meal without leaving the park.

The other Mandai parks are right next door. River Wonders has river animals and giant pandas. Bird Paradise has large walk-through aviaries. After dark, Night Safari lets you see animals that are active at night. Many families visit the zoo by day and Night Safari in the evening.

In the same part of the island, Kranji War Memorial is a quiet place to remember those who died in the Second World War.
