What Makes a Hotel Family-Friendly in Singapore

A simple checklist to tell a truly family-friendly Singapore hotel from one that only allows children.

By EatStays Editorial · Updated · 4 min read

So what makes a hotel family-friendly in Singapore? It is more than a line saying children are welcome. A good family hotel has room for everyone to sleep safely, a pool children can use, easy food nearby and a location that keeps journeys short.

Many hotels allow children but are built for business travellers. Use the checklist below to compare listings before you book, and browse our family-friendly hotel guides for more help.

Children allowed vs family-friendly

Almost every hotel in Singapore accepts children. That does not mean the stay will be easy. A business hotel may have small rooms, a deep rooftop pool and no space for a cot. A family-friendly hotel plans for children from the moment you check in.

Look for proof in the listing, not just the words "family" or "kids". Photos of family rooms, a children's pool or a kids' club tell you more than a slogan.

Rooms that really fit a family

Room size is the first test. City hotel rooms in Singapore can be compact. Hotels also usually enforce the maximum number of guests per room, and children count. Check the limit before you book, not at the front desk.

What to check in the listing

  • Occupancy: how many adults and children the room allows.
  • Beds: whether an extra bed, sofa bed or baby cot is available, and if it costs extra.
  • Family rooms or suites: at larger hotels, such as Shangri-La Singapore, check the room list for family rooms or suites.
  • Connecting rooms: two rooms with a door between them. Our guide to connecting rooms vs a family suite compares both.
  • Bathtub: handy for bathing babies and toddlers.

Pools and play space

Singapore is hot and humid all year, so a daily swim is part of the routine for many families. But not every hotel pool suits children. Rooftop infinity pools can be deep, busy and short on shade.

A family-friendly pool has a shallow area or a separate children's pool, plenty of shade and clear rules. Resorts on Sentosa, such as Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa, are built around large outdoor pools. Our guide to kid-friendly hotel pools in Singapore shows what to look for in photos.

Some resorts also run a kids' club with supervised activities. Check the age range, opening days and any fees before you plan around it.

Kitchen, fridge and laundry

Small extras make a big difference with children. A fridge keeps milk and fruit cold. A microwave warms baby food. A washing machine means you can pack fewer clothes.

Serviced apartments often include a kitchenette and a washing machine. Ascott Orchard Singapore and Pan Pacific Serviced Suites Orchard are two to compare for longer stays. You can also browse all serviced apartments in Singapore.

In a standard hotel room, ask whether the fridge is free for your own use or full of minibar items. Ask about bottle sterilising and warming baby food, too.

Location and getting around

Location matters more with children, because every journey takes longer. A short, flat walk to an MRT station helps a lot with a pram or stroller. MRT stations have lifts, but a long walk from the exit to the hotel still adds up in the heat.

Think about where you will spend your days. If theme parks and beaches are the plan, a Sentosa resort saves time. Our list of things to do with kids in Singapore can help you decide. If Gardens by the Bay is high on your list, see our pick of family hotels near Gardens by the Bay.

Food nearby matters too. A hawker centre or mall food court close to the hotel means quick, cheap meals that suit fussy eaters.

A quick family-friendly hotel checklist

  1. The room fits your whole family within the occupancy limit.
  2. A cot, extra bed or sofa bed is confirmed in writing.
  3. The pool has a shallow area and shade.
  4. There is a fridge you can use, and ideally a microwave.
  5. Laundry is available in the room or the building.
  6. The MRT or a taxi stand is a short walk away.
  7. Simple food for children is easy to find nearby.
  8. Child policies are clear: ages for free stays, breakfast and extra beds.

FAQs about what makes a hotel family-friendly

Do children stay free in Singapore hotels?

It depends on the hotel. Some let young children stay free when they use existing beds, while others charge for every guest. Check the age limit and the breakfast policy in the listing.

Can I get a baby cot in a Singapore hotel?

Most larger hotels have baby cots, but numbers are limited. Request one when you book and ask the hotel to confirm it.

Are Sentosa resorts better for families than city hotels?

Sentosa resorts usually have bigger pools and more outdoor space, close to the theme parks and beaches. City hotels are better for museums, food and short MRT rides. Browse Sentosa resorts to compare.

How many people can stay in one hotel room in Singapore?

Many standard rooms take two adults, and some add one child. Larger families usually need a family room, a suite or two rooms.
