Hostel Packing List for Singapore: Items That Help

The small items that make a Singapore hostel stay easier: a padlock, quick-dry towel, eye mask, earplugs, the right adaptor and a layer for cold air-con.

By EatStays Editorial · Updated · 4 min read

A good hostel packing list for Singapore is mostly about small things. Pack a padlock, earplugs, an eye mask, a quick-dry towel, a UK-style plug adaptor and a light layer for cold air-con.

None of these items cost much or take up much space. Here is what to bring and why each one helps.

Keep your things secure

A padlock

Many hostels give you a locker but not the lock. A small padlock solves this, and a combination lock means no key to lose. Pick one with a thin shackle, as some locker loops are narrow. Some hostels use keycard lockers instead, so check before you go.

A pouch for documents

Keep your passport, cards and some cash in one zip pouch. It is quick to lock away and easy to carry. For more on keeping things safe, read our guide on whether Singapore hostels are safe.

Sleep well in a shared room

  • Earplugs: foam earplugs block snoring, zips and late arrivals. Bring a few pairs.
  • Eye mask: people switch lights on and off at all hours. A mask helps you sleep through it.
  • A light layer for air-con: Singapore is hot outside, but dorms are often kept cold. A thin jumper or hoodie helps at night and on chilly trains and buses.
  • Modest sleepwear: you share the room, so pack something comfortable you are happy to be seen in.

Bathroom basics

Many hostels in Singapore provide a towel, but some charge for one. A quick-dry towel is light, dries fast in the humid air and takes up little space. Add these too:

  • Flip-flops for the shower and the walk to the bathroom
  • A toiletry bag with a hook, as shower cubicles often have little shelf space
  • A mesh or laundry bag to keep worn clothes away from clean ones
  • Small bottles of shampoo and body wash, in case none are provided

Power and tech

Singapore uses the Type G plug, with three square pins, the same as the UK. The power supply is 230 volts. Most phone and laptop chargers handle this, but check the label on anything else.

  • Plug adaptor: bring one, or two if you carry several devices
  • A long charging cable: the socket may be far from your bunk
  • A power bank: useful when every socket is taken
  • Headphones: for music and videos without disturbing anyone

Extras for sightseeing and the weather

Bring one outfit that covers your shoulders and knees for places of worship. You will need it at Sri Mariamman Temple in Chinatown or Sultan Mosque in Kampong Glam. Follow the rules at each site, and take off your shoes where asked.

Singapore is hot and humid all year, with sudden heavy showers. Pack a small umbrella for both sun and rain, plus sunscreen and insect repellent. Tap water is safe to drink, so a refillable bottle saves money.

What to leave at home

Forgot something? Mustafa Centre in Little India is a large store where you can pick up most travel basics. That means you can travel light and skip these:

  • Too many clothes: many hostels have laundry, and light clothes dry fast
  • A bulky bath towel: it stays damp and fills your locker
  • Vapes and e-cigarettes: they are illegal in Singapore
  • Expensive jewellery: fewer valuables means less to worry about

FAQs about packing for a Singapore hostel

Do Singapore hostels provide towels?

Many do, either free or for a small fee. Some capsule hotels in Singapore include a towel and toiletries. Check your booking, or pack a quick-dry towel to be safe.

What plug adaptor do I need for Singapore?

Singapore uses Type G plugs with three square pins, as in the UK. The power supply is 230 volts.

Do I need my own padlock?

Often, yes. Many hostels provide lockers but not locks, and some sell or rent them at the desk. A small combination lock is the easiest choice.

Why pack warm clothes for a hot country?

Air-con in dorms, malls and trains can be strong. A light layer keeps you comfortable indoors and at night.
