Cheap Eats on Orchard Road: Mall Basements and Food Courts

Where to find low-cost meals on Singapore's main shopping street, from mall food courts and basement food halls to a nearby hawker centre.

By EatStays Editorial · Updated · 4 min read

The best cheap eats on Orchard Road are in the basements and on the upper floors of the malls. Almost every large mall has a food court or a basement food hall. There, a main dish often costs around S$6 to S$12, far less than in the street's restaurants. Prices change, so check the boards.

This guide covers where to look, what you will find and how to keep costs down while you shop. For the street itself, see our guide to Orchard Road.

How budget eating works on Orchard Road

Orchard Road is a long line of shopping malls. The main stretch runs past three MRT stations: Dhoby Ghaut, Somerset and Orchard. There is no large hawker centre on this stretch. Instead, budget food sits inside the malls, in three main forms:

  • Food courts: air-conditioned halls of small stalls with shared tables.
  • Basement food halls: takeaway counters, bakeries and snack stalls, often near a supermarket.
  • Older shopping centres: smaller malls with simple eateries and local-style stalls.

Food courts work like hawker centres, only indoors and a little pricier. Our guide to hawker centres vs food courts explains the differences.

Food courts in Orchard Road malls

Food courts are the easiest cheap meal on the street. You can get noodles, chicken rice, Indian breads, Korean and Japanese dishes and local desserts under one roof.

  • Wisma Atria: has a Food Republic food court on an upper floor, a short walk from Orchard MRT.
  • ION Orchard: has a large food court on its lowest basement level, linked to Orchard MRT station.
  • 313@Somerset: has a food court on an upper floor, beside Somerset MRT station.

Stalls and operators change from time to time, so treat these as starting points. Each mall has a directory near the lifts and escalators.

Food courts get very busy at weekend lunchtimes. Go before the lunch rush or in the middle of the afternoon for an easier seat.

Mall basement food halls

Many Orchard malls have a basement level with food stalls, bakeries and a supermarket. The food hall at Takashimaya in Ngee Ann City is a well-known example. Here you find bento boxes, buns, local cakes and snacks.

Basement food halls suit a quick lunch or a picnic-style meal. Seating is often limited, so many people take their food away. Supermarkets also sell fruit, sandwiches and drinks for less than a café would charge.

Old-style coffee shops and older malls

Just off the main road, Killiney Kopitiam on Killiney Road is an old-style coffee shop. It serves kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs and kopi, a classic cheap breakfast. Read what kaya toast is before you order, or see more kaya toast spots.

Orchard Road also has older malls that feel more local, such as Lucky Plaza and Far East Plaza. They have small eateries, snack shops and simple cafés. Prices are often lower than in the newer malls.

Newton Food Centre: the nearest hawker centre

For true hawker prices, go to Newton Food Centre. It is close to Newton MRT station, one stop from Orchard on the North South Line. You can also walk there from Orchard along Scotts Road.

Newton is busiest in the evening, when the satay and barbecue stalls are in full swing. Try satay, chicken wings or carrot cake. For oyster omelette, there is Hup Kee Fried Oyster Omelette.

Some seafood is sold by weight. Ask the price before you order so you know what you will pay.

Tips for spending less around Orchard

  • Eat your main meal in a food court and save the cafés for a quick drink.
  • Carry a water bottle. Tap water in Singapore is safe to drink.
  • Share dishes so you can try more stalls for the same money.
  • Stay nearby to cut transport costs. Value hotels such as Hotel Grand Central are in the area, and you can compare more hotels in Orchard and River Valley.
