Chek Jawa Wetlands

A boardwalk over mangroves and the sea on the tip of Pulau Ubin, with a lookout tower and rich coastal wildlife.

About Chek Jawa Wetlands

Chek Jawa Wetlands sits at the south-eastern tip of Pulau Ubin, a small island off Singapore's north-east coast. The wetlands cover around 100 hectares. In this one area, you can see several kinds of coastal habitat side by side.

A boardwalk takes you through mangroves and out over the sea. Entry to the wetlands is free, though you pay a boat fare to reach the island.

Why visit Chek Jawa Wetlands

Chek Jawa is special because so many habitats meet in one place. There is a sandy beach, a rocky shore, seagrass, mangroves and coastal forest. Each one supports different plants and animals.

This makes it one of the richest wildlife areas in Singapore. It is also a calm place, far from traffic and crowds. For many people, it is the best part of a trip to Pulau Ubin.

What to see on the boardwalk

The boardwalk is flat and easy to walk. It is split into a coastal section and a mangrove section.

Coastal boardwalk

The coastal boardwalk loops out over the shallow sea. At low tide, the water drops and parts of the sea floor appear. Look for crabs, mudskippers and small fish in the shallow water.

Mangrove boardwalk

Another part of the boardwalk winds through the mangrove forest. Look closely at the mud for mudskippers and crabs. You may also spot birds, monitor lizards and, with luck, otters.

Jejawi Tower

Jejawi Tower is a tall lookout tower in the forest. Climb the stairs for wide views over the treetops and the sea. It is a good place to watch birds.

House No. 1

Near the entrance stands House No. 1, an old Tudor-style house by the sea. It now serves as a visitor centre with displays about the wetlands.

How to get to Chek Jawa Wetlands

First, get to Pulau Ubin. Bumboats leave from Changi Point Ferry Terminal, next to Changi Village. The ride takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and fares are usually paid in cash.

From the Pulau Ubin jetty, most people rent a bicycle and ride to Chek Jawa. You can also hire a van taxi near the jetty. Bicycles are not allowed on the boardwalk, so leave yours at the bike racks near the entrance.

Read our full guide to Pulau Ubin for more on the boat and the island.

Tips for visiting Chek Jawa Wetlands

  • Check the tide times. Low tide shows more of the shore and its wildlife.
  • Bring water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Shade is limited on the coastal boardwalk.
  • Walk quietly, and do not touch, collect or feed any animals.
  • Stay on the boardwalk unless you are on an official guided walk.
  • Bring cash for the boat ride and bicycle rental.

NParks sometimes runs guided walks on the shore at low tide. Check the official National Parks Board (NParks) website for opening hours, guided walks and any closures.

Food and things to do nearby

Food options at Chek Jawa are very limited, so bring a snack and water. A few simple eateries sit near the main jetty on Pulau Ubin. On the mainland, Changi Village Hawker Centre is a short walk from the ferry terminal.

After the boat ride back, take a stroll at Changi Beach Park. To stay nearby, Village Hotel Changi is close to the ferry terminal. You can also browse more hotels in Changi and near the airport.
