A colourful Hindu temple on Serangoon Road dedicated to the goddess Kali, and one of the oldest temples in Singapore.
Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is a Hindu temple on Serangoon Road, the main street of Little India. It is dedicated to the goddess Kali and is one of the oldest temples in Singapore. Entry is free, and respectful visitors are welcome.
The temple is busy with worshippers every day. A visit is a chance to see the faith and daily life of the local Hindu community. Here is what to see and how to visit with respect.
The temple dates back to the 1800s. It was set up by early Indian settlers who lived and worked around Serangoon Road. The building has been rebuilt and extended several times since then.
The name Veeramakaliamman means Kali the Courageous. Kali is a powerful Hindu goddess. She is believed to destroy evil and protect her devotees. In the temple, she is shown with her sons, Ganesha and Murugan.
Many devotees come here to pray for strength and protection. The temple is also an important place during festivals, including Deepavali.
Before you go inside, stop in front of the entrance. The gopuram, or entrance tower, is covered in bright sculptures of gods and goddesses.

Inside, the temple is full of colour, sound and the smell of incense. Look out for these features.
If you arrive during a puja, stand to one side and watch quietly. It is fine to observe, but do not block the way for devotees.
The temple is at 141 Serangoon Road. Little India MRT station, on the North East Line and Downtown Line, is a short walk away. Rochor MRT station on the Downtown Line is also within walking distance. Read How to Use the MRT in Singapore for help with the trains.
The temple is easy to include in a walk around Little India. Start at Tekka Centre and walk up Serangoon Road.
