Contemporary art galleries in former British army barracks, set among tall trees off Alexandra Road.
Gillman Barracks is a cluster of contemporary art galleries in a former British army camp. It sits among tall trees off Alexandra Road, a short trip from the city centre. You can wander between galleries, look at new art and enjoy the old colonial buildings.
Entry to the grounds is free, and the galleries are free to enter too. It makes a relaxed half day for art lovers and curious travellers alike.
The British Army built the camp in 1936. It was named after General Sir Webb Gillman, a British army officer. Soldiers lived and trained here for many years.
After the British forces left Singapore, the buildings had several other uses. In 2012, the site reopened as a home for contemporary art. Today the old barrack blocks hold galleries, art spaces and a few places to eat.
In 2026, plans were announced to turn the wider Gillman Barracks site into a housing estate in future years, while keeping many heritage buildings. For now, the galleries continue to operate. Check the official website for the latest news before you go.
The setting is a big part of the appeal. The low colonial buildings sit on a gentle slope with lawns and large trees. It feels quiet and green, even though the city is close.
Exhibitions change often, so every visit is a little different. The galleries show painting, sculpture, photography, video and installation art. Many show artists from Singapore and the wider Asia region, as well as from other parts of the world.

Gillman Barracks often hosts special events during Singapore Art Week, which usually takes place in January. Check the official website for the latest exhibitions and events. Gallery staff are usually happy to talk about the works on show, so feel free to ask questions.
Labrador Park MRT station on the Circle Line is the closest station. From there, it is a short walk along Alexandra Road. The road is busy, so use the pedestrian crossings.
Buses also run along Alexandra Road, and taxis can drop you close to the galleries. Our guide on how to use the MRT in Singapore explains fares and train lines.
