How hotels by star rating work in Singapore

Sorting hotels by star rating helps you see, at a glance, what kind of stay you are paying for. A star class is a short guide to facilities and service. It does not tell you about the location, the room size or how helpful the staff are. Use it as a starting point, then read the details of each hotel.

Star labels are not the same everywhere. Booking sites and travel guides each use their own rules. One hotel might show four stars on one site and five on another. That is why every hotel on our lists also has a Google rating of 4.0 or more, based on guest reviews.

What to expect from 3-, 4- and 5-star hotels

3-star hotels

Three-star hotels in Singapore are simple and practical. Rooms are often small, as space in the city is tight. Expect air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a private bathroom. Some have a small gym or pool, but many do not. Hotels such as Ibis Singapore on Bencoolen in Bugis and Holiday Inn Express Singapore Katong fit this group. Our Value Hotels page lists more.

4-star hotels

Four-star hotels add more space and more facilities. Most have a pool, a gym and at least one restaurant. Service is more personal, and rooms are usually better finished. This is the class many visitors choose for a first trip. Good examples include Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong in Katong and Oasia Hotel Downtown in Tanjong Pagar. See the full 4-Star Hotels list.

5-star hotels

Five-star hotels offer the most space, the widest choice of restaurants and the highest level of service. Many have spas, club lounges and large pools. Some are famous buildings in their own right. Raffles Hotel Singapore, The Fullerton Bay Hotel on Marina Bay and Capella Singapore on Sentosa are all on our 5-Star Luxury list.

How to choose the right star class

  • Set your budget first. As a rough guide, 3-star rooms often cost around S$150 to S$250 a night. 4-star rooms are often S$250 to S$400, and 5-star rooms usually start above S$400. Prices change with dates, events and demand, so check current prices before you book.
  • Check what the price includes. Many hotels show rates with "++" after the number. This means service charge and GST (Goods and Services Tax) are added on top. Breakfast may also cost extra.
  • Think about time in your room. If you will be out all day, a 3-star hotel near an MRT (train) station may suit you well. For a slower trip or a special occasion, the pool and service of a 5-star hotel can be worth the extra cost.
  • Look at room size. Rooms in Singapore can be smaller than you expect. Families should check the bed types and how many guests each room allows.
  • Read recent reviews. Look for comments on noise, cleanliness and the walk to the nearest MRT station.
  • Check the cancellation rules. Cheaper rates are often non-refundable.

Best areas for each star class

Star class and location often go together. Five-star hotels cluster around Marina Bay and the CBD (Central Business District), along Orchard Road and on Sentosa. These areas put you close to the skyline, big shopping malls and the beach.

Four-star hotels are spread more widely. You will find them in the city centre, around Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar, in Katong and near Changi Airport. Crowne Plaza Changi Airport is a handy 4-star choice for early flights.

Three-star hotels are common in Bugis, Little India, Novena and Katong. These areas tend to cost less and still have good MRT links. They are also close to plenty of low-cost local food. FAQs about hotels by star rating

Is a 4-star hotel in Singapore good enough?

For most visitors, yes. Well-rated 4-star hotels are usually clean and well run, with a pool and a gym. They cost less than 5-star hotels and are often in the same areas.

Why do star ratings differ between booking sites?

Each booking site uses its own rules to set star classes. Some go by facilities, others by guest scores or the hotel's own label. Always check the photos, room size and reviews as well.

Are 3-star hotels in Singapore clean and comfortable?

Well-rated ones usually are. Every hotel on our lists has a Google rating of 4.0 or more. Rooms are smaller, though, so check the size if you travel with large bags.

How much does a 5-star hotel in Singapore cost?

Rates vary a lot by hotel, room type and date. As a rough guide, expect to pay from about S$400 a night, and much more at the top hotels or during big events. Prices change often, so check the hotel's website for current rates.
